Drink for health? When the chosen drink is tea, it’s quite possible! Aging-related
skeletal pain responds nicely
to muscle and joint boosters like those in green tea. Wilson Family Chiropractic offers
nutritional advice like drinking green tea to our Millville
chiropractic patients.
AGING-RELATED SKELETAL, CARTILAGE, AND JOINT DISEASES
Skeletal
risks like disc height loss and changes like the two joint and muscle diseases
called osteoarthritis and sarcopenia come with aging. A recent
study described the interaction of height loss and vertebral
fractures in postmenopausal women. The researchers concluded
that age rather than the height loss was suggested to be the superior
method of determining vertebral
fracture risk. (1) Spinal osteoarthritis was associated with
stature loss in postmenopausal women, a condition known
to reduce quality of life. (2) Cartilage is the sufferer
of the inflammatory and degenerative aspects of these diseases. The loss of strength
and muscle mass that accompanies sarcopenia necessitates attention to quantity and quality
of skeletal muscle mass. This is where green tea comes
into play. Green tea has catechins that help maintain
healthy joints and skeletal muscle by decreasing inflammatory
mediators. (3) Wilson Family Chiropractic hopes you might enjoy
some beneficial green tea!
NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
Green tea is available in a variety of
forms. Another recent article reports
that knee osteoarthritis patients benefitted from a combination
of curcuminoids, collagen and green tea extract which were found to inhibit inflammation.
The researchers wrote that natural ingredients have
a rational role in the care of osteoarthritis. (4) Another
natural option: spearmint tea! A study of how spearmint teas affected
knee osteoarthritis found that a commercial spearmint tea bettered
stiffness and physical disability while a spearmint tea brewed from a high-rosmarinic
acid (high-rosA) variety significantly reduced pain. (5) Rosmarinic
acid is taken from the woody, perennial herb, rosemary. it’s a polyphenolic compound with antioxidant properties. Polyphenols are written to be
anti-cancer, anti-tumor cell proliferation, anti-apoptosis (cell death),
anti-metastasis, and anti-inflammatory. Rosmarinic acid is found in plant
species like the mint. (6) Wilson Family Chiropractic is on the hunt for
some high-rosA spearmint tea to add to the Millville chiropractic
treatment plan.
